Cruises
As of March 2003, the Hercule port has started a new commercial activity with the reception of cruise ships at quay. Until present, cruise ships had no other option than to anchor offshore Monaco, making the transportation of its passengers complicated to and from shore, or else alongside the Etats-Unis dock for ships under 100 meters. The new floating seawall has allowed the development of this activity. 352 meters long and completely sheltering ships from the sea, the seawall can receive several cruise ships at the same time.
The port has undergone a true revolution with the arrival of the seawall and the opposing quay. The figures speak for themselves: the number of stopovers has increased from 101 in 2002 to 192 in 2005 and 210 for 2006. With almost 140 000 passengers in 2005 and over 200 000 in 2006, the economic expansion generated by the seawall for Monegasque businesses is greater and greater. With time, the cruise ship activity will become a life-force for tourism in the Principality and the Monegasque economy as a whole will benefit.
